Epiphone Les Paul Studio

This is the quiet man of rock guitar. Solid and confident it never feels the need to “shout” to make its presence felt. There are those who like to tell people they play the guitar and then there are those who simply play. The Studio is often owned and played by the latter.

Technical Spec

It seems a little clinical to try and break this piece of art down into something as crude as a specification. It’s a bit like trying to describe a Van Gough in terms of the paint and canvas used. However I know that lovers of guitars take great pleasure in the details so here they are;

Pick ups     : Alnico classic humbuckers
Hardware     : Chrome
Scale         : 24.75”
Nut width    : 1.68”
Neck        : Set-Mahogany
FB-Inlay    : Rosewood-Dot
Body Material    : Mahogany
Tailpiece     : Stopbar

I know as a guitar lover you will not simply compare specifications. No more than you could compare women by their vital statistics. You have to hold them and caress them and play them. You have to spend some time looking at them and admiring them. You have to spend time with them to appreciate their finer qualities.

Finish

Epiphone les paul studio

The Epiphone Les Paul Studio comes in a range of finishes, each of which is a classic in its own right.

Ebony             – I think Spinal Tap said it best “None more black”
Arctic Blue     – It’s cold, like a girl you can never have.
Worn Brown  – No mess, straight talking, Keep it simple and real.
Worn Cherry – Sweet, sweet, sweet.

I don’t know how you would chose between them. It would be easier picking which of your children you should send to college.

There is very little fuss with the Studio. Nothing around the edges. No bindings. It’s simple clean lines are replicated in its simple clean sound.

The huge tone comes from the Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece combination. This is where the legendary sustain originates.

And its big fat sound is a result of the open coil Humbucker pickups. One of the joys of the Les Paul Studio is its noise-free sound. It’s clean like mountain air.

A piece of history

The Epiphone Les Paul Studio has been around for decades. It is born out of a history in guitar making that goes back as far as 1928.

I have had my own Epiphone for over twenty years and love to look at it as much to play it. it has personal history for me as it belonged to a great friend of mine. I feel the history when I play it. Both the history of my old friend and of the guitar itself.

For many years Epiphone was simply known as the poor man’s Gibson but this is not accurate. Since the thirties Gibson and Epiphone were rivals and equals. It was only fate that saw Gibson come out on top in the 1950’s.

There is nothing inferior about the Epiphone and the Les Paul Studio has gravitas.
Best thing about the Epiphone Les Paul Studio

I love it’s understated approach. This is the introvert of guitars. It’s quiet on the eye but when it speaks out, boy what a beautiful and unexpected surprise. It’s a bit John Wayne; quiet, confident, and not to be messed with.

Who Plays Epiphone Guitars?

Well more people than you would imagine. From Paul McCartney – THE BEATLES to Fred Mollings – BRITNEY SPEARS and numerous others in between. Even Tony Iommi of BLACK SABBATH. This is the appeal of Epiphone guitars. You should join them.
